Sorry, this simply has to be said:

Bowling is not a sport.

All those reports saying bowling is the fasting growing sport in high schools around the country are wrong. It. Isn't. A. Sport.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with bowling. I'm sure setting up and knocking down pins is at least as much fun as watching cars drive around an oval. (And, yes, NASCAR is indeed a sport.)

Bowling is a game. For it to be a sport, the other player would have to stand on the lane and try to stop the bowler from hitting the pins. Which might actually make it more interesting to watch.

Golf is a game. Chess is a game. Ballroom dancing isn't even a game, let alone a sport, so why it's in the Olympics, I couldn't tell you.

Track and field events are "athletics" but they aren't sports either. Tennis is a game. Ping-pong: game. Darts: Game. Poker: Game.

A sport must have a defense as well as an offense, otherwise it's just a compitition; may the better player win. In sports you must overcome the other player not just obtain the objective faster or better. It's mano-a-mano (or womano-a-womano, I suppose). It isn't enough to achieve, you must prevent the other guy from achieving as well.

Sports are the offspring of war. Games are the offspring of whatever the noblemen were doing when they weren't making war.

It had to be said.

very well writen, but,
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

so sorry do pop your hillarious bubble but dictionary .com says other wise.

Tch-tch, silly boy. You can't believe anything you read on the internet.

And hunting isn't a sport until they give the animals guns, too.

lol, poor little Bambi...

HEY WAIT A MINUTE! The little animals are trying not to get shot, the hunters are trying to shoot them, animal against man, hence a sport.

Well, sure, Josiah, but the pins are trying to get away from the bowling ball too (they can't help it if they have no mobility).

Good try, but both sides have to play offense and defense - I suppose bear hunting would fall into the sport category if the hunter doesn't use a scope from a mile away...

Malissa,

I wouldn't say "too much time on my hands" but as it turns out, the critical stage I was supposed to be at next week isn't quite as critical as planned. I do have a workshop that I'd have to miss if we were cruising, though, so it all works out in the end...

ew. the prestige? trust me, it ain't as good as it looks...

you are hard pressed to say nascar has a "offense" 9. Sports. a. the players or team unit responsible for attacking or scoring in a game.
b. the players possessing or controlling the ball, puck, etc., or the aspects or period of a game when this obtains.

for pitys sake, give it up! your arguing with the dictionary!

this is a fun debate to read.

tho, whatever my two cents are worth, I would have to agree with Rob: bowling is NOT a sport, just a game (thankfully, b/c then that would be another reason to claim myself unathletic).

NASCAR has an offense. Blocking, clashing, sideswiping... I don't know if that's legal, but it happens. How many people die bowling???

Dictionary-pictionary, Josie. You have to stand up to the wrong of this world whether it's moral or just bowling...

MY NAME IS NOT JOSIE, BOBBY! THAT IS A CAPITAL OFFENSE!

It's illegal. Bowling is fun. Nascar is not. Who cares if they are sports or not?

my dad says thats disrespectful so i convienintly have to do FLVS before i can delete it.

Rob said...

It's disrespectful in real life, but on this blog, I'll take it with the love that was intended. :)

NASCAR is bowling - I mean, boring...

NASCAR is speed. it may get old to watch, but it's kinda cool when you think about it. they take thier lives into thier hands everytime they get in the car. even though they may not be "athletes" per say...

bowling isn't really a sport. it's competative. sorry josiah.

i'm curious...is there a reason you gave my brother a feminine knickname?!

hahha. ;)

Actually, one of the coolest guys I know was Josie - short for Josiah no less.

And let's not forget the outlaw Josie Whales. I wouldn't call Clint Eastwood 'feminine,' at least not to his face.

hhahahahaha. i stand corrected.

it just sounded feminine to me, because i grew up watching anne of green gables with "josie pie'.

it became the name we called josiah when we really wanted to irritate him. haha.

Ah, sorry, Sherlock, I didn't have the history to realize that would be offensive to you. Forgive me, please.
